Edward Scissor hands and Charlie the Chocolate factory comparison

The similarities between Charlie and the chocolate factory and Edward scissor hands is that both have a peculiar unique feature in the sense that film shares a dark but unusual theme of suspense. The Film has two themes that can be highlighted in the story narrative since that both of the two protagonists are Outcasts an example being is the protagonist form Charlie and the chocolate factory in where Charlie the protagonist is from a poor background and for the fact that he’s family being poor prevent Charlie from having things that his pears take for granted. This is shown when the Golden ticket is in the bars of Chocolate and everyone in his class are talking about it the teacher asks the students about the chocolate bars and how much they eat and the number being that greater then the amount that Charlie eats that being one which in the scene the sense of shock and surprise his pears exhibit upon mentioning that Charlie only eats one bar a year. With Edward Scissor hands the social isolation that is presented in the film that Edward is more isolated from society than his pears or those of his age as a whole. From the trailer we see that Edward doesn’t speak nor does he appear to verbally interact with people. Another case of this is the fact Edward is found alone at the beginning alone and on his own which would emphasise both protagonists isolation.

The Story and Narrative follows along the lines between the improvement of the protagonists position and state of being however due to the stories of the two characters being significantly different. With the first being that Charlie comes from a family who live in an almost destitute setting with Charlie living with his Mother, Father and all four of his Grandparents. The stat of Edward from what the viewer could get from the film being that Edward is living with a relative of his all alone without any friends or without his parents there of.  The two states of the two characters are presented that they come from an undesirable states or backgrounds. The Protagonists encounter a situation which transitions into an experience, which has a life changing effect, which heavily influences the life of the protagonist in a more positive manner. The choice of story the Burton chooses to use as appropriate stories that he turns into a motion picture show that he bests works with stories that he would know that they would fall under Fantasy and Child fiction.

The Films often use a dark setting with the beginning of the story having a dark theme about it from the beginning with the use of bad weather as a part of the Mise en scene with the use of fog or gloomy winter weather and the use of the Protagonists wearing clothing that is of a usual dark colour pallet. The film itself usually lightens up with a warmer lighting and the surrounding often changes into a more vibrantly colourful environment to connote the positive reflections of films state of mood in the story.

Media Coursework 5/10/18

Media Coursework
For the first week of Media our class was reintroduced and for others some where being introduced to the basics of media this was just a way of slowly settling us into the higher curriculum of the subject. We learnt the basics on the first week nothing significant in comparison to what we have learned so far. For the first week we where taught the basic forms of media identification with the Genres which we could use to identify the media that we would have to review this comprised of Music videos with the first One being Thriller by Michael Jackson. From what we analysed our group was tasked in with finding and identifying key sub-genres and Genres. We where able to learn more about identifying features within certain genres fro example if one was to watch a Sci-Fi film or anything on the visual side of media we would list features that would relate to surroundings and features these could be the following Space, Aliens and even Lasers to list a few this form of identity is known as iconography.

We concluded the above when we proceed to study and analyse Symbolic codes, which would tie into Setting, Mise en Scene, Acting and Colour. We then proceed to go into the Technical codes, which would follow with Camerawork, Editing, Audio and Lighting. On the second and third week we began to analyse Trends and features that are popular on the Market, which is referred to as “Zeitgeist” which roughly translates to “On Trend”. With the mid part of the Third week our class began to go into the “Purpose of music videos” this was where we had to try and find the purpose of music videos this was where we had came to the conclusion that music videos are used as a means of escapism and a form of identity this branched into further more smaller purposes all of which are too many to list. We studied from time to time with part subjects relating to music videos with things such as studying music charts and popular music trends for example we where looking at top music trends this would be from 1988 to 1999.

We began to study the differences and key differences between “Mainstream” and “Indie” with both record companies, Audiences and Artists. The longest scale of features we have studied from the media texts is features and ideology with things that would tie in with the media context. We are now on the forth week and we are still analysing Music videos but now with more intense scrutiny. We to look at the meaning of music videos with things such as personal opinion and intended audience we where put into groups and tasked into studying the key features. We are on a weekly basis continuing with our scrutiny of these media products or in other words Music videos. By week Five we should still be continuing on what we have learnt over the last 4 weeks with all of the above.
